On March 20, Lisa Hoffman, social sector coach and consultant, led a conversation at Foundation Center West: A Day in the Life of a Major Gifts Officer. She spoke with two major gifts officers: Shernaz Polad Boga, director of donor engagement at the ACLU Foundation of Northern California; and Leigh Illion, director of leadership gifts at the San Francisco Marin Food Bank. Boga and Illion shared their experiences and best practices for succeeding in their current work cultivating and securing major gifts for their respective organizations. On March 15, Paul Lamb, principal of Man on A Mission Consulting, gave a presentation at Foundation Center West on cryptocurrency and its benefits for the social sector. In his talk, Bitcoin for Good: Digital Currencies and Blockchain for Nonprofits, Lamb defined and identified cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology. He gave examples of how nonprofits and foundations are currently using these technologies, and he also provided ideas of how social sector organizations which are new to cryptocurrencies might start adopting them.
Finding the right funding match is key to getting the money you need to fulfill your mission. To do this, you must know how to match your needs to funder priorities as you research and apply for grants.
If there is one undisputable truth about the social sector it is this: evolution is unavoidable. The social sector has been an indelible part of civic life, but has often struggled to balance meeting the demands of an ever changing society with sustaining viable organizational infrastructures that offer efficient and effective services.
